Paul and Gisela Estes Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics
The purpose of the Paul and Gisela Estes Mathematics Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to two PSU mathematics majors in good academic standing. The donors intend the two scholarships will always be used to further the wider goals and purposes of the Mathematics department and in the best interests of its undergraduate student majors. The two scholarships will be awarded as follows:
The first Paul and Gisela Estes Scholarship in Mathematics shall be awarded to a current, first-year student (to support the sophomore year of study) majoring in mathematics or mathematics education. The recipient shall have demonstrated success in his or her first year math courses by obtaining a minimum of a 3.25 grade point average in those courses. The scholarship application shall require a short essay explaining the applicant’s interest in the mathematics major, his or her mathematics career goals, and his or her involvement departmental, campus and/or community service. The recipient may be selected in the spring of the student’s first year but will be contingent on the recipient’s mathematics grade point average at the completion of his or her first year.
The second Paul and Gisela Estes Scholarship in Mathematics shall be awarded to a current junior mathematics or mathematics education major (to support the senior year of study) who has maintained at least a 3.25 grade point average in math classes with a preference for students who plan to study abroad and/or have successfully studied a year or more of foreign language at PSU. The scholarship application shall require a short essay explaining the applicant’s interest in the mathematics major, his or her mathematics career goals, and his or her involvement in departmental, campus and/or community service.
In the event there are no qualified applicants, the funds shall be reserved for disbursement the following semester or academic year.
