Nancy Bailey Snyder '63 Semester-at-Sea Scholarship Fund

The purpose of Nancy Bailey Snyder Semester-at-Sea Scholarship Fund is to provide financial support for a deserving graduate or undergraduate student at Plymouth State who is participating in the Semester-at-Sea program and is pursuing or intends to pursue a career in teaching.

The eligible recipient/s shall be a matriculated student of limited financial means who is participating in the Semester-at-Sea program and is currently pursuing or intends to pursue a career in teaching. The award is made upon consideration of the applicants financial need and desire to broaden their world perspective through the study of and experience in other countries and cultures; subsequently, it is intended to enrich the recipients teaching as a result of such experience.

The selection committee based in the Global Education Office shall determine the most appropriate application and selection process based on the stated criteria. The process will remain flexible enough to allow for the award to support participation in either semester or the summer session. The process will include a brief essay and interview to assess the applicants potential to gain experience and knowledge that will enhance his or her teaching career.

It is understood the selection of the recipient may occur prior to their acceptance to the Semester-at-Sea program. Awarding of the scholarship should be provisional based on their acceptance with an alternative recipient, when possible.

  1. In 750 words or less, please provide a detailed personal statement that includes the reason you are pursuing a semester abroad with Semester at Sea, your goals for your time abroad, and why Semester at Sea will benefit you academically and professionally as a future educator. Please also include information about any personal circumstances that you would like the committee to consider. At the top of your essay please include the name of the program and the voyage dates.
  2. In 500 words or less, please provide information on your engagement on campus and off-campus. This could includes sports, clubs, jobs, volunteer experiences, service trips, and so on. Also provide information on how you plan to promote study abroad when you return to campus.
