Joseph F. McCaffrey Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Joseph F. McCaffrey Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Plymouth State University is established with a generous gift from Ross Humer and Sally Ann McCaffrey Humer in honor of her late father.

Joseph F. McCaffrey was a radio and television journalism for over five decades in Washington DC who was particularly well known for covering Congress and politics. One of Mr. McCaffrey’s first assignments in Washington involved contributing to broadcast coverage of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. Later, he worked from the 1950s to the 1980s for WMAL radio and was a newscaster for WMAL-TV in the 1960s and 1970s.

It is the donors’ express wish that students submit an essay as part of their scholarship application with the theme of journalism—what it has meant and will mean in American life and politics in the 21st Century. .
All students are eligible to apply and need not be enrolled in journalism courses to be eligible.
