Gisela and Paul Estes German Study Abroad Scholarship

The purpose of the Gisela and Paul Estes Study Abroad Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to PSU students in good academic standing to participate in a credit-bearing study abroad program in a German-speaking country. Believing that immersion in a different culture is a life-changing experience, the Donors wish is for PSU students to live in and experience a German-speaking culture and to further their own proficiency in speaking the German language. Eligible students shall be in strong academic standing, according to the minimum standard required for study abroad, and must be admitted to credit-bearing study abroad programs in a German-speaking country: Germany or Austria. The scholarship may be awarded for the traditional academic semesters, Winterim, or summer session as long as the program is credit-bearing.

The Global Engagement Office, or its successor program, shall determine the most appropriate application and selection process based on the stated criteria. The selection process shall include consultation with faculty in the Department of Language and Linguistics, or its successor program. Application for the scholarship must include a written essay where applicants express their personal motivation and potential for a valuable cultural exchange.

The Global Engagement Office, or its successor program, may determine the number and amount of awards based on the yearly return and may divide the payout between equally qualified recipients. Should no candidates meet the criteria or be deemed worthy, the funds shall be retained for awarding the following semester or academic year, according to the selection committee’s discretion.
